French Immersion - Early

Mastering two languages in one classroom

Did you know that French is spoken on all five continents and more that 160 million people live and work in French each day? We live in an increasingly interconnected world and becoming bilingual is an exciting choice for many families.

French Immersion

French Immersion is designed for students whose first language is not French. The objective is full mastery of the English language, functional fluency in French, as well as an understanding and appreciation of French cultures around the world. The program is well established and has been serving Red Deer families since 1981! Our dual track schools offer French Immersion and English programming in the same building. This approach promotes tolerance and understanding among our students. It provides opportunities for interaction between the English and French programs to the  benefit of all students!

Students enter French Immersion in Kindergarten, or grade one, and follow the same curriculum as everyone else except the language of instruction is French. Students learn the language through content and by using French in meaningful ways. No special skills are required. Children with all types of academic ability can succeed in learning a second language!

Parents do not need to speak French!Mountview%20French%20K%20JStokoe%2085.jpg

Parent-teacher conferences are held in English and report cards are always written in English. Most immersion parents have either a limited knowledge of French or no working knowledge of the language. Parents can help at home by: reading to their child in English, visiting the public library, going on family outings, communicating openly with the child and the school, and providing the encouragement and support that all students need.
