Red Deer Public adds more Academy programs for 2023/2024 school year

Programs of Choice

You want your child to have a great education, while building character and ensuring they reach their full potential. Families now have more choice at Red Deer Public Schools as the Board of Trustees approved three new additions to the Division’s Academy programs, as well as a full day, every day Kindergarten program.

This includes Golf and ESports for high school students as part of the Sports Academy, the Academy of Dance, which is the first choice in Red Deer Public’s new Academy of Arts, as well as a new full day, every day Kindergarten program at Annie L. Gaetz Elementary School.

The Sports Academy for the 2023/2024 school year includes:

  • Baseball

  • Softball

  • Soccer

  • Hockey

  • Golf

  • ESports

  • SportFit (multi-sport opportunity)

Our programs in the Sports Academy, and the Academy of Dance, which will be the start of Red Deer Public’s new Academy of Arts, are among the many choices we look forward to offering our students and families. We want to ensure Red Deer Public Schools is the best choice for your children. They are going to get excellence in teaching and learning, with opportunities that will ensure they are well prepared for their future,” said Nicole Buchanan, Board Chair. “We offer a number of choices already that help students reach their full potential, and our Board is excited to offer these new programs of choice.”

Red Deer Public’s new Golf Academy will be open to any high school student at both Lindsay Thurber Comprehensive High School and Hunting Hills High School in partnership with River Bend Golf and Recreation Centre and Aurora Indoor Golf. The new ESports Academy is offered to high school students at Hunting Hills High School and Lindsay Thurber Comprehensive High School, with the Academy being run out of LTCHS’ new ESports lab; and the Academy of Dance will be housed at Westpark Middle School and students will train at facilities at Red Deer Polytechnic. In addition, the new Discovery Kindergarten program will offer full day, five days a week programming and will take place at Annie L. Gaetz Elementary School. This program will focus on discovery through play and be led by a certified teacher and Educational Assistant.

“As Red Deer Public continues to enhance our programming, and meet the needs and interest of students and families, we continue to expand our programs of choice which will build on existing choices and offer new opportunities,” said Buchanan.
