Do You Want To Volunteer in Our School?

Volunteers

In an effort to maximize the safety of your children and our students, the Red Deer Public School Division has a policy on school volunteers.

  1. All adult individuals (i.e. 18 years of age or older on September 1 of a school year) who serve as volunteers in a school or a school-sponsored activity under the direct supervision of school personnel (i.e. in a classroom, field trip or at a school event where school staff are also in attendance) must provide the Principal with the following prior to beginning service as a volunteer:

    • Criminal Record Check, *** Notice the Vulnerable Sector Check is Not Required
    • Two written references, on a form prescribed by the Division, that attests to the individual’s suitability to serve as a school volunteer. At least one of these references must be prepared by a school official. These references must confirm the suitability of the individual to serve as a school volunteer.

  2. All adult individuals (i.e. 18 years of age or older on September 1 of a school year) who serve as volunteers in a school or at school-sponsored activities who will be interacting with students in an unsupervised location either within or outside of a school (i.e. chaperoning an overnight trip, coaching school teams) must provide the Principal with the following prior to beginning service as a volunteer:

    • A Police Information Check, including a vulnerable sector check, and
    • Two written references, on a form prescribed by the Division, that attests to the individual’s suitability to serve as a school volunteer.

In order to obtain a criminal record check and only pay the reduced rate, a form needs to be filled out at the school and signed by the principal to either upload to the on-line process or to take in to the police station. Without this signed documentation, you will be charged the full rate. Please call the school at 403-343-8780 to request a form be filled out on your behalf.

Please note that although these measures will involve a small amount of work on your part, we believe they will go a long way to enhancing the safety of your children. To make it as easy as possible for you to meet these new requirements, we have included links to these documents (below) in the right hand menu:

  • School Volunteer Registration Form (for you to complete & return to the school)
  • 2 Volunteer Reference Forms (for you to use in obtaining references and to provide completed references to the school upon completion
  • Police Information Request Form – Criminal Record - provide a copy to the school when complete. This can be completed in person at 4602-51 Avenue or on-line through the City of Red Deer website - here is the link

Please feel free to make copies of these template documents as needed, or to ask the school office staff to make additional copies for you. We will be more than pleased to make it as easy as possible for you to provide the necessary documentation.

We understand that the fee for obtaining a Police Information Check when the individual making the request plans to serve as a volunteer is $5.00. A digital copy of the approved form with be emailed to you. You will also need to upload a government-issued ID when applying online for this document.

If you plan to volunteer at more than one Red Deer Public school within the Division, you are ONLY required to complete one set of this documentation. With your consent, we can share the documentation with any other school(s) you plan on volunteering with.

Completed copies of police information checks, written references and other documents shall be retained by the school for five years. In the event that the individual wishes to continue as a volunteer following the five-year period, new documentation must be supplied.

Thank you for your willingness to serve as a volunteer and for your understanding in meeting these requirements in order to enhance the safety of your children and our students.

Sincerely,

Teresa Tataryn, Principal

Greg Joslin, Vice Principal
