Creativity abound at Young Writers’ and Creators’ Conference

Young Writers Conference

About 250 Grade 4, 5 and 6 students from across Red Deer Public Schools are getting set to flex their creativity muscle in a day filled with amazing authors, writers, artists, and creators.

The 32 annual Young Writers’ and Creators’ Conference will take place at Oriole Park Elementary School on May 19.

There are 19 sessions students can take part in. Some of those sessions include How to Write a Fantasy Story with Author Tyler Enfield; Digital Comics Using Storyboard That! With Tracy Wirtanen; Bracelets, Pyramids and Ninjas with Author Sigmund Brouwer; Storytelling & Knowledge Keeping - From an Indigenous Point of View by First Nations Teachers Terry Lakey; Writing for Radio and Television by TV & Radio Broadcasting by Al Redel and Randy Redel; Drawing Your Favourite Friend by Art Teacher Hana Wolfe and Improv for Storytellers by Drama Teacher Tara Koett, among others.

“We have creators coming from across Alberta, but also from within our school division,” said Lori Irvine, Principal at Oriole Park Elementary School. “Under the direction of these very experienced poets, authors, and writers, the students will get to explore and bring to life the writing and creating process.”

Ultimately, it’s a fantastic and fun day for the students and it’s great to see students from various schools immersed in literacy.

“Literacy is a priority for Red Deer Public Schools, so this certainly aligns with our school and Division goals to encourage literacy in students. Our students will see the beauty and joy that is embedded in literacy and how words bring ideas to life,” said Lori.
