Hundreds of Grade 5 students to attend Grow Kids event
With a priority on health and wellness for students, Grow Kids is set to take place next week at the G.H Dawe Community Centre, and the Collicutt Centre. In its 13th year, the event will run on Wednesday, May 15 where all Grade 5 students in Red Deer Public Schools will have the opportunity to participate.
Both programs focus on active, healthy physical, social, and emotional development, and have brought together hundreds of Grade 5 students for years. Originally referred to as “Grow Boys” and “Go Girl,” these independent initiatives are now both referred to as “Grow Kids.” The programs are different, but the focus on health and wellness is consistent. Grow Kids encompasses the ideas of responsibility, respect, connection, relationship, movement, creativity and positive well-being.
“We are so excited to welcome our Grade 5 students to this year’s Grow Kids event,” said Sean Grainger, Vice Principal at Joseph Welsh Elementary School and Wellness Coordinator with the Division. “It is important that we continue to support the health and wellness of students, and we are looking forward to hosting students at the G.H. Dawe Community Centre.”
This year’s theme revolves around four main focus areas, which include:
- Respect
- Understanding
- Relationships
- Responsibility
During the day, students will have the opportunity to attend several sessions, some of which include ‘Design Your Own Time Machine’; ‘Craft Your Way to Wellness’; ‘Bully Banish’; ‘Hand Drumming’; and more.
“Not only will our event host over 800 Grade 5 students from Red Deer Public Schools and surrounding school divisions, but there will be 100 high school student volunteers, many presenters, and dozens of teachers,” said Grainger. “We know it’s going to be a great day!”
