Middle School Philosophy

The National Middle School Association website is a tremendous resource for anyone interested in learning more about middle school philosophy.  Of particular interest are the "Services/Resources" and "Research" pages that can be accessed from the NMSA home page.

The Turning Points website contains the basis of the ideas presented in the Carnegie Corporation of New York's (2000) publication Turning Points: Preparing American Youth for the 21st Century.  The core belief of this document is improving teaching, learning, and assessment for all students, with a specific vision for the unique needs of middle level learners.

The National Association of Secondary School Principals' website contains a great deal of information of interest to middle school teachers and administrators.  Lots of connections to research-based strategies for school improvement.

This is the website of the the Middle Years Council of the Alberta Teachers Association (formerly known as the Alberta Middle School Association.)

The website of the Middle Years Association of British Columbia.

The website of the Saskatchewan Middle Years Association.

The website of the Manitoba Middle Years Association.

Middle Level Teacher Resources

This is a wonderful resource for all middle level teachers, parents and students.  It contains links to some of the absolute best online resources aimed at middle level reform and improvement.

Curriculum Integration Resources

A document from the Manitoba Department of Education designed to support curriculum integration for Manitoba teachers, but full of useful information for teachers in any jurisdiction.

A website developed by North Carolina State University.  This site is heavily based on the work of James Beane with particular reference to the developmental appropriateness of curriculum integration for young adolescents.

General Education Resources

While much of the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development website is useful, this particular section, entitled "Education Topics" is an excellent starting point for anyone who wants to learn about current education topics.  It provides definitions, short articles and resources for those interested in current education topics like constructivism, differentiating instruction and multiple intelligences.

A must for Alberta educators.  The Alberta Education site contains valuable curriculum information.
