I am a retired government manager and have the time to be an effective and committed trustee for Red Deer Public School Board. Serving as a trustee in Prince George for 14 years (6 years as Board Chair), a trustee in Nelson for 11 years, and 7 years on a school council, have given me 32 years of actual experience that I bring to the board table. Being a director on the board of the B.C. School Trustees Association (3 years) also gave me provincial experience and perspective.
My wife Terry, (nee Holmes) a 3rd generation Reddeerian, and I have been married for 35 years and have two grown children and one grandson. My daughter-in law teaches grade 3-4 in Wolf Creek School Division. I am actively involved in the following Red Deer organizations: Red Deer Regional Health Foundation Board Member, 2010 Central Alberta United Way Public Service Campaign Co-Chair, Chaired Red Deer Highland Games in 2009, 2010 and 2011 and a member of Waskasoo Optimist Club.
As your trustee I will work in support of; maintaining locally elected autonomous school boards, continuing the improvements in our high school completion and graduation rates, improving learning outcomes for special needs students, and working with our Aboriginal community to improve our Aboriginal students’ achievements. School space for our growing student population is a concern! The Board has submitted a Capital Plan requesting a new elementary school for the southeast sector of Red Deer which has now been approved by the provincial government. The Board will have to work with our local and provincial education partners in seeing this project through to completion.
Public education is the basis of a strong country and I will use my 32 plus years of experience to work hard for our students and for Red Deer Public School Board.
