Watch out Wonder Woman, here come the Heroes for Haiti.
A group of grade 5 students at G.W. Smith decided they had to do something to help the victims in Haiti, and their efforts helped raise over $2,000.00.
Dressed up as superheroes, the students went to each class, from Kindergarten to grade 5, and talked about how they could help those affected by the devastating earthquake in Haiti. Rather than simply asking for money from their parents, the focus was on the kids giving up a luxury or working to earn money. Since most elementary students don’t have jobs, they had to think creatively.
Some students shovelled driveways, others recycled bottles, and some gave up their allowance. One student even donated the money used for her traditional Friday night pizza.
On February 1st, 2010, the students, dressed in their costumes, presented the Red Cross with a cheque for a whopping $2.079.37!
Funds will be used for immediate relief and basic needs such as clean water, food and shelter.
The kindness and compassion demonstrated by these superheroes and all the students at G.W. Smith deserve a big Way to Go!
