Special education needs of children and students
Intervention Services staff provide additional support and services to every school and program in the areas of inclusive education, guidance and counselling and partnerships. Services include consultation, professional development and individual assistance to support teachers and staff working with students with diverse needs. Learning Assistance Team: Each school employs a Learning Assistance teacher and EA to focus on curriculum, capacity building and collaboration for students with diverse needs.
Additional Support Services
District Psychologist: The District Psychologist assists in the formal assessment of students to identify special education needs and supports. The Psychologist also works with school counsellors and other medical professionals to coordinate services for students.
School Counsellors: School Counsellors provide services to students in the area of educational, personal and/or career counselling. Some Counsellors are trained to provide additional assessment or mental health support.
Mental Health Services: Mental Health Workers are assigned to each school by the Alberta Health Services to assist with the diagnosis, understanding or treating mental health disorders or issues. Workers also provide support and assistance to teachers and families to help understand mental illnesses.
Support Team for Assessment, Rehabilitation and Training (START) provides assessment and consultation services to teachers of young children with severe disabilities. Services include occupational and physical therapy and/or health related support services.
Student Health Outreach Services (SHOS) provides assessment and consultation to teachers of students with mild to moderate health related issues. Services may include consultation by a physical therapist, occupational therapist, nurse and psychologist.
Regional Educational Assessment and Consultation Services (REACH) provides assessment and consultation services to teachers working with students with severely disabling conditions. Services include consultation by a physical therapist, occupational therapist, consultant for the visually or hearing impaired.
Aboriginal Frontline Program provides support for the educational well being of students and families who are First Nations, Metis or Inuit. This Program also helps to enhance the understanding and awareness of our native culture and community.
Family School Wellness Program provides direct and support to students and their families who are at risk of school failure or who experience difficulties at home, school or in the community. Workers are assigned to each school and assist teachers to co-ordinate services in addition to working directly with families.
