Faced with potential funding challenges, the Board of Trustees invited the community to identify what it believes are the essentials at its 13th annual District Town Hall Meeting on Monday, February 8.
While the following day the government announced ‘no cuts’ to education funding in the provincial budget, the reality of increased costs will mean that the District will have to take a close look at what budget areas are essential, which might be considered for reduced funding, and which could be eliminated.
Gathering perspectives from stakeholders is an important factor in making budget decisions. Through the use of electronic polling, attendees gave strong support for a system that responds to those students most in need including:
- educational assistants to provide needed support
- interventions for students with special needs
- counselling and psychological services
- reducing class sizes
- maintaining the fee waiver program

The Town Hall Meeting provided important, broad discussions on what stakeholders value within our system. These discussions will be one of many sources of information that the Board will use in developing next year’s budget and education plan.
